thankful thinking day 9
My Dad never talked about World War II. Oh we got a couple of stories about short-sheeting beds and tank races that consumed 3 gallons to the mile, but we never heard about the war itself. So I was surprised today when Mom shared the one and only story Dad ever told her about the action he saw. (Now mind you, this is coming from a 92-year old woman so she may be having selective memory, and then again, maybe not.)
Dad was a young Army officer with 200 men in his unit. He was ordered by his commanding officer to take over a small town in Germany. It would have meant sending them down a narrow pathway that was strewn with hostile gunfire. My Dad sent a small scouting party out who reported what they saw. Dad sent a second party out who confirmed the first report. Dad then told his commanding officer that there was no way he was going to lead his men into wholesale slaughter.
My Dad was like that. He stood for his men and his men stood for him. They trusted him because he was trustworthy. He knew their very lives were in his hands.
Lord, on this Veteran's Day, I thank You for the man of honor that he was. I thank You that he expected no more or less of others than he expected of himself. I thank You that he was a very good Dad.
Lord, I also thank You that You are a very good Father who knows that my very life is in Your hands.
"... the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly." (Proverb 2:6-7)
