Winter Solstice and Christmas Light

a month of giving

Ohmygosh! Yesterday was winter solstice ~ my favorite day of the year ~ okay, one of my umpteen favorite days of the year! And why am I so groovy on winter solstice? Well, because it's the shortest day of the year. (Scholars tell me that it's actually a handful of days on either side but who cares?)

Now, for those of you who know me, I am a daylight fanatic. My idea of a fab vacation was Norway last summer when it never got dark. Darkness is just not my thing (although I do love a clear, cold starry night or big fat snowflakes falling in the light of the street lamp ~ but I digress.)

No, give me sunlight and lots of it. So why do I get excited about the shortest day of the year? Because now the days will get a teeny bit longer until we reach the longest day of the year. Do I hear a "yippee, hooray?"

And another reason I get so excited about winter solstice is that although our world has grown to its darkest point of the year, in just a few short days the Light of the world will be born To me, it is fitting that the deep darkness is juxtaposed next to intense brightness.

...because of the tender mercy of our God...the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. (Luke 1:78-79)

Through Him all things were made...In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood....The true Light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. (John 1:3-5, 9)
