My mother, my husband and I went to see a military band perform last night. I must admit that when Mom called at the beginning of the week and said she wanted to go hear them play, we begrudgingly agreed to take her. I mean we just couldn't imagine an evening of listening to military tunes.
Mom will clap to anyone playing any kind of music. It's just her thing. So we knew she would get into it. But we, too, found ourselves tapping our feet and clapping as the band played one rousing piece after another. My husband had played in his high school band and he professed that he hadn't heard "real" music like this since, well, high school.
I was inspired for another reason. I was inspired to watch an ensemble of men and women who had dedicated their lives to protecting my freedom. I was further inspired to watch retired men and women of all branches of the armed services stand when their particular song was played ~ be it army, navy, air force, marines or coast guard. I was honored to be in their presence, and proud that my father had devoted his life to serving the very country that I love and believe in.
The United States is far from perfect, but I can't think of anywhere on earth I would rather live. God Bless America, and thank you to the men and women of the red, white and blue -- including my husband who spent six years in the Army reserve.
