Do You Live in the Now or Later?

"The Bible talks very little about the future, it focuses on who God wants you to be now." Whether or not it's a true statement, when I heard that comment, it certainly gave me pause for reflection. As a life coach, I work with clients who are mapping out their futures. Clarity on who and where they are right now is paramount to success in planning for who and where they want to be. Unfortunately, some of them are always living for the future and not fully experiencing the who and what of their "now."

On my walk today I saw an elderly gentleman who was living in the now. The top was down on his cute yellow sports car, the radio was blasting Frank Sinatra or some other dead guy, and he was clearly loving every moment. I watched him drive by and wondered if this was the now he had always lived or was it a new-found now. Why is it so many of us don't get focused on the now until there are less "nows" than yesterdays left,or until some tragedy focuses us squarely in the blessings of the now?

So what does it mean that God wants me to focus on who He wants me to be now? Maybe it means slowing down long enough to listen to what He's saying to me. That would mean being able to discern His voice from others. That would mean knowing God's character. That would mean taking time to get into His Word. This now stuff is more complicated than I thought it would be. But it's terrifically satisfying and joy-filled to be the woman God wants me to be now in this season of my life ~ and I won't have the regret of wondering what happened to my "nows" when I come to the end of my tomorrows.
