I've come across another organization that supports fair trade. This one, TassaTag, in partnership with ECPAT USA, offers a life of dignity and freedom for children who have been held in bondage as sex slaves. The company encourages travelers and travel agents not to engage in this sordid industry (its name stands for travelers-against-sexual-slavery).
TassaTag sells brightly colored luggage tags that are easy to spot in the airport luggage carousel, and are hand-embroidered by women in the affected countries. The price is $12 and well worth it. I bought one for my suitcase and another for my purse, since the latter will provoke conversations from others who see it and, thus, I can spread the word.
They make great gifts. And TassaTag is working on a proposal to partner with companies who want to put their company logo and contact information on the back of the tags (where the traveler's information is written).
Go to www.tassatag.org or www.ecpatusa.org for more information.
