Even at 92 years old, my mom is still very, very picky about what kind of food she buys and puts in her mouth. We preceded our little shopping spree with dinner at a local restaurant. I sat there and watched her pick through her salad hunting for white lettuce. You know, the pale hard stuff that's closest to the stalk. She ended up with a pile of it on her napkin, and as pretty as you please, didn't blink an eye when she sweetly asked the server to bring her a fresh napkin ~ oh, and by the way, take this one full of yucky, white, non-nutritional lettuce while you're at it.
We headed over to the grocery store and she eyed every banana carefully before she chose her five for a dollar. The milk had to have the proper expiration date. The large, individually-sold pears weren't as reasonably priced as the bag of smaller pears but she felt the quality was superior.
I watched her and realized that my apple didn't fall far from her tree! I hope that means I get her longevity, too!

that must be her secret to long, healthy life - she should write a book!
