In But Not Of

I have (another) confession to make. I'm getting sucked into the world. I'm getting tangled up in disagreements about America and socialism, the arrogance of our government leaders and the health care bill. I'm getting sucked into these conversations and feeling completely schizophrenic.

As a Christ follower, I'm called not to be of this world. I am called, however, to follow my government (it's somewhere in the Bible). And furthermore, I am called to do for the least of those among us.

The world's definition of "Socialism" - (1) A social system in which the producers possess both political power and the means of producing and distributing goods. (2) In Marxist-Leninist theory, the building, under the dictatorship of the proletariat, of the material base for communism.

The Bible's call to the Church - Acts 4:34 "Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold...and distributed to each as anyone had need."

Matt 24:30 "Christ will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least
of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' "

Isaiah 9:6 - "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder..."

Romans 8:31 - "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us,
who can be against us?"

Romans 13:1 - "Let every soul be subject to the government authorities.
For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities
that exist are appointed by God."

So is the health bill the right way to do for the least of those among us in America? Is it good and right to provide for them at the expense of our liberty? Am I to follow those chosen to rule us in the earthly realm?

What I'm wrestling with is how do I live in this world without being of this world? The health care debacle puts the question square in front of my face and it's making me a slightly crazy person these days.

Today's PDL speaks to this a little bit...
Perspecitive Protects Us From Error

Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective. Colossians 3:1-2 (MSG)

"Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds ...."
(Ephesians 4:14 LB)

Perspective protects us from error. If there was ever a time that Christians need to be grounded in the truth it is today. We live in a society that rejects absolute truth and accepts every opinion as equally valid.

Pluralism has created a very confused culture. The problem is not that our culture believes nothing but that it believes everything.

God intends for us to have his wisdom and perspective. The result of this will be believers who are ROCK solid: "Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth." (Ephesians 4:14 LB)
