Weeds or Wildflowers?

road trip

One of the delights of driving through the countryside this time of year is the multitude of flowers dancing in the fields, lining the roadways and even popping up in the cracks of the asphalt. As my eyes soaked in nature's work, I thought about how my perspective can affect even how I view these gifts of Spring. Are they weeds or wildflowers? Do I welcome their presence or do I abhor their existence?

I once took a gardening class where the instructor said that the definition of a "weed" is any plant the gardener doesn't want.

So to some, this orange poppy brings a smile to their lips, while others view it with disdain. Maybe I chose a wrong example since few would pooh pooh this lovely flower ~ unless, of course, it was an unwanted guest in their garden. So how about a dandelion? Lots of money is spent by gardeners eradicating this "weed" from their carefully manicured lawns. Yet for others, the vibrant yellow flower is gratefully harvested for its greens and the making of dandelion wine.

While I was musing over weeds or wildflowers, my mind turned to people. Do I look at people as gifts from God who created them, or do I make judgments based on my own inadequate view of their value?

For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16
