Let me just get this out in the open ~ I am not a bug fancier. I know they are important players in the ecosystem, and they can even be fascinating on some level, but in general, they don't do it for me. However, I am a fan of lightning bugs, butterflies and lady bugs.
Ladybug, what a delightful name for a pretty little bug. Their appearance and their name, however, belie their true nature. For starters, they are voracious eaters. Over the span of its three-to-six week life, a ladybug can consume as many as 5,000 aphids.
And they secrete a foul tasting fluid from their joints. Those cute little spots and bright red wings are a warning sign to predators to "remember me, I taste awful!"
No, these are not "ladies" in the traditional sense of the word. But I still like them and we were treated to thousands of them on our Spring trip to the desert.
