I'll Take Grace with Those Manners Please

grace (1) a disposition to be generous or helpful; good will (2) a favor rendered by one who need not do so

After two days of writing on etiquette I've decided I'm not cranky. I am worse. Social graces (definition #1) are the glue that holds a culture together. It's the nice-nice that allow us to interact in a civil manner towards each other. However, I also know that I am called to a higher standard of grace (definition #2).

Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God's grace. (2 Cr 1:12)

Surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace... In(Jesus) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace... Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (Eph 3:2, 1:7, 1Peter 4:10)

Yes, I am called to a different standard of grace than the world has to offer. It goes beyond social nice-nice, etiquette or manners. It goes to the very heart of how I am called to see you as God sees you ~ His beloved child. I am called to make allowances for nonbelievers as this standard is not required of them. And while I am called to hold believers accountable to the Truth that is Christ, I am to do it in a loving manner.

There we are again, back to manners. So while ill-mannered hikers and gym goers are responsible for their own behavior, I am responsible for my attitude towards them. To be honest, it's hard. It's so much easier to be self-righteousness. Gosh, I don't like the sound of that.

Lord, I am in need of a fresh dose of Your grace. I need a fresh dose daily, like manna from heaven. Grace me so I can grace others through You. Amen.
