I think modern culture has gotten the family thing wrong. We have worked so hard at pulling away and being independent that we have forgotten the value of close family ties. I know some families are wildly dysfunctional and most are at last mildly dysfunctional, but that doesn't mean we throw the proverbial baby out with the bath water. All things considered, families are still a place of comfort, refuge and belonging. The key is that "family" doesn't necessarily mean biological ties.
Family (n) 1/ persons related by blood or marriage; kinfolk; relatives 2/ all the members of a household 3/ a special or particular world of something; kingdom; fellowship.
I just can't imagine what it would be like to travel through life without an extended connection of fellow sojourners. I feel fortunate that I belong to a family of kinfolk, a fellowship of friends and the kingdom of God.
