Fat Fashion

(Blogmeister disclaimer ~ forgive me if I offend anyone.)

I've got a theme going this week ~ quoting and responding to articles.  Today's discussion is on fat fashion.  I'm not making this up.  The article, Plus-size market heats up, was written by Margit Detweller of the Associated Press and appeared in my newspaper a couple of days ago.

I have to be brutally honest ~ when I first started reading this article I thought, "You have got to be kidding!  Why would anyone want to glorify being fat?"  But as I read further, I was convicted that overweight women (and I don't mean just by 10 or 20 pounds) should have access to fashion just like their thinner sisters do.  There is certainly lots of evidence that obesity creates health problems and shouldn't be a lifestyle one aspires to, but that doesn't mean that these women should have to settle for sweat suits and potato sacks.

They shouldn't have to base their self-esteem on their weight.  In fact, no woman should have base her self-worth on her weight.  Granted, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it's a cultural lie to believe that being uber-thin is the only way to becoming a woman of worth.

Plus-size bloggers are rallying the cause of plus-size fashion, and they've stopped apologizing for the way they're made.

"You're fat, you're full-figured...But if everyone see Gabi  wearing a certain look on her blog and they say 'wow, she looks great in that,' it changes everything," says an owner of a plus-size vintage shop. " I imagine the kind of suffering I could have avoided if this kind of imagery was available to me when I was young.  I don't really see plus-size, I see a young, confident woman who looks  fantastic."

God sees only the beauty in all of us.  It's time we looked in the mirror and agreed with Him.
