God-Sized Opportunity
I read in my newspaper that a young woman in her early 20's checked herself into the ER at our local hospital because she was so sick from all the alcohol she had consumed. She had no one to help her. Evidentally her drinking is such a problem that she has alienated family and friends. I don't know this young woman but my heart goes out to her. It's hard to imagine the demons she must be living with are so bad that she has to anesthetize herself from the pain, rejection and even self-loathing.
As I sat in my front yard watching the small finches flitting back and forth with delirious delight between our waterfall and feeder, I couldn't help but think of this young woman. Their good fortune is not hers. And their sweet songs are in direct contrast to her soulful cries.
I wish I could have somehow reached out to her. Certainly, she needs expert care on many levels, but she also needs simple unconditional love and kindness. I could have given that to her if even for a brief moment.
"Every opportunity to do good is a God-sized opportunity....Lord, open my eyes and my heart to the needs around me and give me a willingness to do what I can to love others in practical ways. Make me a giver and give me a generous heart and spirit." (from 30 Day Faith Dare by Debbie Alsdorf.)
