Artsy Rebel

Lessons from the Kitchen

Today is tile day.  We are driving 2 hours each way to choose, purchase and schlep back our kitchen floor.  We are really into Saltillo tiles, the real stuff from Mexico, made from their local clay complete with paw prints from any wandering cat.

(from Wikipedia) Saltillo tile is a type of terracotta tile that originates in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico It is one of the two most famous products of the city. Saltillo tile vary in colour and shape, but the majority range from in varying hues of reds, oranges and yellows. Tiles are shaped either by pressing quarried clay with a wooden frame (super), or carving out the desired shape (regular). Depending on the raw tile's placement among other tiles at the time of firing, its colour ranges from yellow to a rich orange.

Saltillo is cool and not like everyone else's kitchen floor, at least not in our neck of the woods. I must admit that I like to be different.  As soon as a designer tells me it's "in" or "everyone is choosing this pattern" my eyes glaze over, my hearing fades and my mind wanders.   I think it's the artsy side of me.  Or maybe the rebel.   Are they one in the same?
