Happy Birthday, sweet Christ child and holy God!
I can barely breathe at the thought of writing about Christmas from Christ's perspective. I know how I feel on my birthday ~ so special, wanted, loved; a birth that was fully expected and eagerly anticipated. I wonder how Christ felt about His entry into the world.
He had to step down from His heavenly post and enter the small, flawed world of humans. He was unplanned for by His human, Jewish, teenager mother who, in turn, was almost rejected by His human father for what appeared to be an act of immorality on her part. His parents were poor in worldly standards. He was bounced around in the womb while His mom sat astride a donkey on her way to Bethlehem. He was born in a manager among lowly farm animals His first visitors were common shepherds. He did get a celestial billboard proclaiming His birth, and wise men did travel far distances to offer precious gifts and praise. But in the overall scheme of things, it appears that He got shortchanged. He appeared to give up the universe for a people who believed that He would arrive like a knight on a white horse to rescue them, not as an illegitimate baby born to poor parents in a stinking manager. He came to be accepted not rejected.
But Christ came eagerly, willingly, in full obedience to and in complicity with God His Father. He was in on this plan, and was fully THE plan, from the very beginning before there was time, before there was earth, before there was humanity.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(John 1:1-17)
Christ eagerly anticipated His birthday because He knew that His arrival meant everything for our rebirth as children of God. He eagerly participated in His birthday because He knew that we desperately needed God's grace; a grace that was only available and possible through the life and death of a holy Christ ~ fully God yet born a man.
Christ's birthday is a mystery that has only been partially revealed to us. He came to glorify the Father. He came to fulfill God's plan. He came so that we could live.
Happy Birthday sweet Christ child and holy God!
