Researchers have finally caught up with conventional wisdom ~ to wit ~ people who are happy are less likely to have heart problems. Their earth shattering advice:
"If you aren't a naturally happy person, just try acting like one," says Dr. Karina Davidson of Columbia University Medical Center.
And my personal favorite ~ "I often tell my patients not to get too depressed because it's bad for your heart," says Dr. Joep Perk of Sweden's Kalmar University.
Happiness is not the key to a healthy heart. Happiness is focused on someone or something bringing us to that delightful state of mind, which means it's conditional and inconsistent, and tough to control.
Joy is the long term ticket to physical, emotional and mental health. Joy is not dependent on outside factors. Joy is an attitude that is chosen. It has nothing to do with circumstances and therefore is more consistent.
And how do we choose to live in joy?
You (Lord) have made known to me the path of life; You fill me with joy in Your presence...(Psalm 16:11)
The precepts of the Lord are right; giving joy to the heart. (Psalm 19:8)
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to Him in song. (Psalm 28:7)
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness... (Gal 5:22)
