Mentor Leader

I just finished the first day of a two-day leadership conference.  My head is about to explode.  Good information but way too much information.  Different speakers spoke to different aspects of leadership but the one that caught my attention was Tony Dungy's talk on the mentor leader.

The past two years, I have been pouring into young women's lives, sometimes as a mentor,  sometimes as a teacher and sometimes just as a friend, so I listened earnestly to what Tony had to say.  He says an effective mentor leader is one whose focus is not on self or personal gain but on the other person.

"Servant leadership flips the world's model upside down:  leaders who serve ~ not just when it's convenient, neat and acceptable, but when it's timely, needed, and right.  Truly serving others requires putting ourselves and our desires aside while looking for ways and opportunities to do what is best for others."  1

How do I set aside myself, my ego, my desires and truly serve these young women?  I must look up for the answer.

"Faith is the foundation and strength of a mentor leader."  2

Tony quoted another great leader on the subject ~

"Everybody can be great.  Because everybody can serve....You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love."  3

My role model and my strength as a servant leader comes from the only One who can give me a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love ~  my mentor leader, Jesus Christ.

(Blogmeister's note:  quotes 1 & 2 from Tony's book, The Mentor Leader.  quote 3 from Martin Luther King, Jr.)

That's so cool. I wish I could have attended. We youngins are all so blessed and appreciative of the precious time you take to be our friend and mentor :)
