American Values

One of the things I like to do at the gym is read other people's magazines.  Since I am stuck either humming to myself, watching inane morning television or reading while riding the exercise bike, I have made a game of looking for interesting topics in magazines.  It's a rich treasure trove to blog about.

An article by Joe Klein in the September 27th issue of Time Magazine underlined the frustration of what the average American is feeling in today's economy.  And I quote (with no editorial comment on my part):

"Ten days into my cross-country road trip and I'm .....(finding) that people are freaked out.  They're frustrated and anxious....They can diagnose the problems, but they don't have any strong ideas about solutions...When you scratch just a bit beneath the surface, people stop lacerating politicians and start talking about American values.   'You've got to figure that our parents wouldn't have walked away from a mortgage,' says Jason Pless, 'I'm not walking away from mine.  But people I know well, friends, are taking a hike, and I wonder, what has happened to us as a people?' "
