Needing Space and Wanting Gratitude

Lessons from the Kitchen

So my son moved home and a first-his-bedroom-then-my-office room is now his bedroom again.  I have been granted a small piece of real estate in a corner of the living room for my computer and a couple of pens.   What I find more annoying than the lack of space is my husband sitting three feet away reading (rustling) the newspaper.  I didn't realize how I had welcomed, yes even enjoyed, the solitude of my own office.  Whether or not I closed the door, I occupied a space that was mine, as noisy or as quiet as I wanted it to be.

I guess it could have been worse.  I could have moved into my new kitchen where I vowed I would never have a desk again.  I always had to move to the kitchen when my office became a guest room for visitors.  Now instead of bouncing back and forth, I have a fairly stable spot (until it's time to put up the Christmas tree and then who knows where I will land).

So in the midst of this I'm trying to be grateful that we have a place my son can come home to; to be grateful that I can function in a flexible office (although wait until I start making jewelry on the dining room table and someone accidentally ingests a bead!); to just be grateful.

Speaking of grateful, the kitchen counter tops are being installed tomorrow morning.  After what seemed like an eternity of waiting (5 weeks), they are finally being installed.  That means we can then move along with lightning speed (!) with the back splash.  And once the back splash in installed, voila, the appliances are next.  I've been cooking since August with a barbecue grill and a microwave.  I can't even imagine the luxury of working with my new 6-burner gas stove.  Yes, I have much to be grateful for so today's pity party just ended.
