Compass

Joy seems to be a word on a lot of people's lips as we enter this new year.  Maybe it's the uptick in the economy or just a general sense that things will be better in the months ahead.  Joy means different things to different people so I wanted to go back and review the definition for myself to make sure I'm following the right compass.

dictionary definition:
joy is 1) a condition or feeling of high pleasure or delight  2) a source or object of pleasure or satisfaction

Biblical definition (BlueLetterBible.com)
Besides joy in a general sense, as the response of the mind to any pleasurable event or state, joy as a religious emotion is very frequently referred to in the Old Testament. Religion is conceived of as touching the deepest springs of emotion, including the feeling of exultant gladness which often finds outward expression in such actions as leaping, shouting, and singing. Joy is repeatedly shown to be the natural outcome of fellowship with God.

The element of joy in religion is still more prominent in the New Testament. It is the appropriate response of the believer to the "good tidings of great joy" which constitute the gospel. Joy is both exemplified in the life and character, and set forth in the teaching of Jesus. There are many intimations that, in spite of the profound elements of grief and tragedy in His life, His habitual demeanor was gladsome and joyous, certainly not gloomy or ascetic:

I need to break this down.  Both resources agree that joy is a state of being.  It's a good, very good state to be in.  It comes both as an expression and a source of something deeply satisfying.  The Bible takes it further by saying that joy is a natural outcome of fellowship with God.  It is exemplified in the life, character and teachings of Christ who looked not at circumstances for His joy but directly to God regardless of circumstances.

Joy despite my circumstances.  Joy that is a deeper seated joy than one based on the fleeting, and sometimes superficial, moments dictated by positive circumstances.  Joy that still fills my tank even if the circumstances by all counts should be draining it dry.  Joy in everything because my eyes are fixed on the Giver of joy, Who has overcome all circumstances.

Okay, it's good to be reminded of the direction my compass is pointing.  It's good to have clarity on the source of my joy, my pleasure, my satisfaction.  I do believe my compass is pointing up.
