Pinpricks

I'm not quite sure what MLK means by this quote.  Is it that only when things are really bad can you see the good?  I do know that it is often only in our darkest times that we can see pinpricks of hope ~ hope that reconfirms that the struggle is worth the beauty it can reveal.
