The Groovies are having "grown children" conversations ~ as in negotiating the waters of being the parent of a grown child. I guess once a parent, always a parent, at least when it comes to be concerned about our kids' present choices and future outcomes, regardless of their age. However, there does come a point when we can no longer parent the way we did when they were younger and under our roof. Even if they boomerang back home, the dynamic changes and it's a more awkward dance.
Our discussions have centered around boundaries and appropriate expectations. The words "tough love" come up, as do "safe landing place." The conversations have been lively and no one is short of an opinion on how to do the parenting-a-grown-child dance or it's more complicated version, grown-child-back-in-the-nest two step.
