Crisis is a word that commonly evokes negative connotations and feelings. That's because we tend to concentrate on the cause and condition of a crisis, but it's a focus that falls short of the full meaning of the word.
crisis ~ (n) 1. a crucial point or situation in the course of anything; a turning point 2. an unstable condition in which an abrupt or decisive change is impending 3. a sudden change in course either toward improvement or deterioration.
A crisis does not stand alone. Certainly, when I'm in the middle of one, it feels like my world is all about my personal upheaval, but in truth, a crisis offers something greater (or worse) on the other side of the disruption and upheaval it causes.
The Chinese word for crisis is a combination of two words ~ dangerous and opportunity. I know that "dangerous" is most likely referring to the situation of the crisis, but I read it a bit differently. I read it as radical, challenging. A crisis gives me the radical opportunity to think and live outside of my box; a life-changing opportunity.
I thought a lot about this concept over the weekend. I thought a lot about how attitude and outlook can affect outcome. I thought a lot about experiencing joy despite the trials of circumstances. I thought a lot about dangerous opportunities and my response to the offer of an enriched life.
