Road Trip ~ Volcano
Down a back road from Sutter Creek is the hamlet of Volcano. It might have been a "big" town of 10,000 back in the late 1800's but it has shrunk over time to just over 100 occupants. This blip on the map, however, is no shrinking violet. Besides its history, charming buildings and bucolic settings, Volcano offers quirky bars, a couple of good restaurants, overnight lodging at a landmark hotel, a car show and plays conducted in an outside, grassy amphitheater. It's a great day stop but plan ahead if you want to see a play or spend the night because this place is popular and worth the trip.
Tip: The Volcano Union Inn is the place to sit outside on their sunny patio and enjoy a tasty meal. The St. George Hotel is a charming and historic place to spend the night.
