There's Gold in Them There Hills

Road Trip ~ Sutter Creek

The Sierra Nevada foothills in northern California is gold country.  While the infamous gold rush of the mid-1900's is history, its legend lives on in the towns that dot the countryside.  Highway 49 between Placerville and Angels Camp is a particularly scenic and interesting drive back in time.

One of my favorite towns along the way is Sutter Creek, reputed to be the site of the first gold strike.  These days most of the gold is found in tourism as thousands of visitors flock its streets to experience history, shop, dine and enjoy wine tasting from the surrounding wineries (this is northern California, after all).  Spend the day.  Spend the weekend.  It's worth the trip.
