Road Trip ~ To Bend and Beyond
Nevada, oh Nevada. You have to be the most boring state in the Union, more specifically, the drive along I-80. Yes, we are very appreciative of this nicely maintained, fairly straight road with a fast speed limit to transport us as quickly as possible across your uninspiring land. And yes, we know that mining is a big draw, as are your casinos ~ you are the land of get rich schemes and dreams. But after touring majestic mountains, dense green forests, lush open meadows, crystal clear alpine lakes, gushing geysers and catching a fleeting glimpse or two of wild creatures, Nevada, you are boring.
Yet, I have a confession to make. This trip has given me a fresher view of your landscape. It’s the first time we’ve driven I-80 in nice weather (read “non-winter”). The abundant sage and other desert plants are pleasantly green, often covered with bright yellow flowers, and emit a pleasant, sweet smell. This verdant layer across the flat valleys brings another perspective to what I had previously deemed as hopelessly dull. It’s a testimony to the tenacity of life and to the beauty of nature’s paintbrush.
So forgive me, Nevada, for my lack of respect. You make due with what nature has given, and you are beautiful in your own way. It’s a life lesson, really. I admire anyone who does not let the dictates of cultural standards of beauty define their self-esteem. They embrace what nature has given them. They stand firm in the knowledge of their self-worth and the beauty of their mere existence. So stand proud, Nevada. Be all that you can be!
