We re-landscaped our front yard a couple of years ago, and did our backyard this past summer. With it came a series of life lessons that impacted me throughout the process. Little did I know that these lessons would continue long past the major re-do. And so goes life. Big course-correcting events do happen, but it's the everyday stuff that often has a continuing impact.
And so it was today as I hacked away at plants that had overgrown their summer welcome. As I cut away the excess, I thought about the pruning we often undertake with the coming of the New Year. (Insert your choices here) ~ store away the _________; clean out the _________; organize the ____________; resolve to ____________ ~ and the list goes on. It's an annual ritual that comes with the promise of a clean slate of 365 days. We need to cut away the overgrowth, the no longer usable or necessary, the distractions, in order to gain a fresh start.
Sometimes the pruning is painful and we try to avoid it. But most of the time, if we do it right and don't just hack away indiscriminately, we experience fresh growth and blossom into a new and renewed, vibrant person yet again.
